A submarine engineer was needed in the production of Frosthaven

Finnish board game enthusiasts are excited as the sequel to Gloomhaven, Frosthaven, has started arriving from Kickstarter to game tables. Frosthaven is even bigger than the original game, weighing over 16 kilograms. According to the game's creators, Cephalofair Games, this was only possible with the help of retired submarine engineer, Matt Healey.

Healey previously worked for the United States Navy, where he designed electric motors for submarines. Healey's specialty was getting giant motors to fit tightly into submarines, leaving as little wasted space as possible. Now in retirement, Healey has founded the company Mess-AXP Game Insert, which designs the interiors of game boxes.

In the case of Frosthaven, Healey has succeeded in fitting over 2,500 cards and 27 cardboard sheets into a box less than 45 centimeters tall. Cephalofair Games founder Isaac Childres says that using a smaller box reduced international shipping costs.

Healey's designed packaging is compact and durable, and it successfully protects the game's parts during transportation. However, Healey admits that he would have liked a little more space for organizing the maps, but the packaging size restrictions made it impossible.

This giant epic will arrive on store shelves later this year. Turn on notifications here and be the first to know when pre-orders begin. Read Polygon's original article for more detailed specs.
